Being Productive vs Being Busy

  • Busy = constant action, you're great at getting things crossed off the list but you often don't feel like you've accomplished anything.

  • Productive = intentional action, you're likely doing less in a day than someone else but you're more likely to feel like you did enough at the end of the day.

Productivity Starts With Having A Meaningful Goal

Being productive is tied to a goal or a target because if you don't have something you're aiming for, you can't actually be intentional with your time and energy.

Additionally, if you have a goal you really don't care about, you'll tend to fill your day with tasks but not be intentional with what's on your to-do list. So it all comes down to setting a goal that you actually care about and that you can realistically achieve.

Play To Your Strengths & You'll Be More Productive

Don't try and change yourself or play the "should" game and think you have to be like everyone else. That's not the case. Instead, identify what type of productive personality you are and then play to your strengths and know where the barriers are too.

For example, if you know that you're a person who loves tackling a to-do list, then ensure that everything on your list is actually something you need to do in order to achieve your goal. If you don't, you'll stay busy with your to-do list but you'll never feel like you're making progress.

3 Types Of Productivity Personalities

After working with hundreds of clients I've realized that generally speaking, there are 3 types of people when it comes to productivity. Just like any other personality type generalization, we can have elements of all types but when you look at a typical week and things are going normal for you, you likely lean more towards one of them.

The Busy Bee

You love conquering to-do lists. Your 24 hours seem to stretch magically, allowing you to achieve more in a day than some do in a week. Your friends and family admire your incredible generosity, always turning to you for help because they know you're the go-to person to get things done. Your ability to take action is truly a gift to the world.

But, a word of caution: watch out for the burnout buzz. Your non-stop pace might make it seem like you're not just busy, but super productive. However, deep down, you might feel like it's never enough. The key? Take a moment to pause and reflect on what you truly want. Yes, you! Identifying your desires will transform your boundless energy into focused productivity. It's not about losing that generous spirit; it's about channeling it into actions that truly propel you forward. Cut out the noise, focus on what matters, and watch your productivity soar without the risk of burnout. 🐝✨

The Adaptable Achiever

You go with the flow when it comes to tackling your goals. When plans go awry, you see it as a nudge to adjust course or a sign that you're headed in an even better direction. Your adaptable nature not only makes you a joy to be around but also keeps your stress levels enviably low—a true gift that many wish they possessed. Your life journey is a testament to your adaptability. Storms may come, but you navigate through them with ease, knowing you can handle whatever comes your way.

However, a word of caution: don't mistake challenges for a signal to hit the brakes. Goals worth pursuing are rarely a walk in the park, and obstacles are just part of the journey. Stay focused on the outcomes you truly desire. Distractions may disguise themselves as motivation lulls, impromptu dance breaks (thanks, favorite song!), phone calls, or email notifications. Don't let these detours become excuses. Keep adapting, stay focused, and conquer those goals! 🌊

The Focused Finisher

You're committed like no other. When you set your sights on a goal, consider it done. Your intrinsic motivation transforms you into the most productive powerhouse, effortlessly diving into tasks until you reach the desired outcome. The best part? You're not just about the destination; you revel in the journey, getting lost in the flow of tasks. Your reliability is a superpower. People trust that if anyone can get it done, it's you and it's a gift that many wish they had.

However, a friendly reminder: steer clear of the "shoulds" in goal-setting. Your intense focus ensures you achieve your aims, but if the goal isn't aligned with your true desires, satisfaction might elude you. Intrinsic motivation is your secret sauce. Make sure every goal resonates with what you genuinely want. Channel that incredible focus into pursuits that light your internal fire, and watch your achievements shine even brighter! 🌟
